After the Treptow-Köpenick District Office equips Wuhlheide Park with a new, unified wayfinding system in 2025, the next phase of the project is scheduled for 2026: the park’s entrance areas will be redesigned, with construction set to begin in the summer of 2026. The goal of this project is to make the park’s entrances more visible, enhance the entrance areas, and integrate them into Wuhlheide’s brand concept.

With this next step in the development of Wuhlheide, the district office aims to further enhance the appeal of the 317-hectare site as a recreational area and tourist destination.

The Department of Streets and Green Spaces will begin construction work this summer. The entrances to Volkspark are set to become more inviting and visible. A unified design—along with the new wayfinding system—is intended to enhance Wuhlheide’s recognizability and ensure that visitors can find the entrances more easily. At the same time, the brand identity is to be strengthened through consistency. This will be achieved through “landmarks” in the form of steles in the brand concept’s design colors, uniform furnishings such as benches, trash cans, and bike racks, as well as uniform paving.

A total of 15 entrances to the Volkspark along An der Wuhlheide and Treskowallee will be upgraded.

• Access to the main axis of the calibration frame

• as well as various access roads (including sports facilities, the cemetery, the model park, and the BWB premises)

In preparation for the start of construction this summer, clearing, tree felling, and tree pruning work must be carried out during the week of February 9, 2026. In total, approximately 2,400 square meters of overmature planting areas will be cleared and 15 trees will be felled. The trees are already severely damaged and have a very limited life expectancy. As part of the renovation of the park’s entrances, 41 new trees will be planted to compensate, and approximately 2,800 square meters of new planting areas will be created, primarily with native trees, shrubs, and perennials.

The project is funded through the Joint Task “Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure” (GRW funds). A total of 5.2 million euros in federal and state funds is being provided through the Senate Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises (SenWEB).

The Berlin State Monument Office has placed the leisure and recreation center (FEZ-Berlin, formerly Pionierpalast “Ernst Thälmann”, opened in 1979) in the Wuhlheide in Treptow-Köpenick under monument protection. This decision recognizes the architectural and historical significance of the building complex, which is a unique testimony to the history of the GDR. At today’s press event, Christian Gaebler, Senator for Urban Development, Building and Housing, Dr. Christoph Rauhut, State Conservator and Head of the Berlin Monument Office, Dr. Antonia Brauchle, Head of the Treptow-Köpenick Lower Monument Protection Authority, symbolically presented the monument plaque to Dr. Margrit Witzke and Chris Berghäuser, Managing Director of FEZ-Berlin.

One of the core ideas of monument protection and conservation is preservation. But this approach is not synonymous with standstill and a ban on change. Listed buildings are always caught between the conflicting priorities of preserving certain qualities on the one hand and adapting and building on the other. With its use as an open house for participation, movement, creativity and exploration from the time of its construction until today, the FEZ has already proven that it is capable of change and always invites new appropriation.”
